West Bengal claimed 3.1% of the overall used car market share in 2024. Kolkata, being a major metro city, has always been a significant hub for pre-owned vehicle sales in India. With an increasing number of buyers opting for used SUVs and MPVs over brand-new ones, the city’s second hand market witnessed notable shifts in demand.

Kolkata’s diverse road conditions and affordability factors contribute to the growing preference for second-hand utility vehicles. CARS24’s 2024 used car market report indicates that SUVs and MPVs continue to be the preferred choice for buyers in Kolkata, offering practicality, spacious cabins, and efficiency. The demand for fuel-efficient models and manual transmission variants remained high in the city.

Top Selling Used SUVs and MPVs in Kolkata in 2024

CARS24 categorises all utility vehicles together under a broad ‘SUVs’ tag, incorporating vehicles that are classified as Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MPVs) and Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs). The Hyundai Creta emerged as the best-selling second hand SUV in Kolkata, with the Ford EcoSport and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga following close behind. The Hyundai Venue and Renault Duster also maintained strong positions among the top-selling pre-owned utility vehicles in the city.

Petrol engine models still remain a dominant choice in used utility vehicles in Kolkata. Automatic gearbox variants saw scarce demand in 2024, while manual transmission equipped variants continue to hold the majority share in Kolkata’s second-hand market.

1. Hyundai Creta | 11% Used SUV Market Share in Kolkata

Second hand Hyundai Creta cars in Kolkata secured the top spot in the city’s used SUV market in 2024, capturing an 11% market share. Up from 9% in 2023, the Creta also gained a position from being the second-most sold used SUV in 2023 in Kolkata. This steady rise is attributed to its premium features, strong brand value and resulting resale value, as well as its versatility as a midsize SUV.

Among pre-owned Creta SUVs sold in Kolkata, 52.5% were diesel variants, while 47.5% were petrol-powered. This slight preference for diesel models not only highlights the demand for better fuel-efficiency but also underlines the wide variety of engines that the Creta has had since 2015. Its manual transmission variants remained the top choice in Kolkata, with 86.9% of buyers opting for it, while 13.1% chose automatic versions.

2. Ford EcoSport | 9.2% Used SUV Market Share in Kolkata

Used Ford EcoSport cars in Kolkata remained a highly sought-after used SUV, securing a 9.2% market share in 2024. Ford’s exit from India could be one of the reasons that it saw a decline from 12% market share and the top spot in 2023, but the EcoSport remains the best selling used SUV in India for 2024. This is largely down to its redeeming qualities as a dependable, sporty and fun-to-drive compact SUV still garnering a fan following.

In 2024, 66.7% of second-hand Ford EcoSport models were largely demanded in its petrol variants, while 33.3% were diesel-powered. While both engines offer exciting performance, the manual transmission equipped variants continued to be the overwhelming preference, with 96.1% of buyers selecting it. Only 3.9% of used EcoSport buyers in Kolkata opted for the automatic versions.

3. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga | 8.3% Used MPV Market Share in Kolkata

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga remained Kolkata’s most popular used MPV, holding 8.3% of the market share in 2024, dropping from 8.9% in 2023. Pre-owned Maruti Ertiga cars in Kolkata retain good demand given its qualities as a family-friendly vehicle with its seven-seater configuration, fuel-efficient engines and reliable reputation that the MPV is known for.

The Ertiga has been powered by diesel engines in the past and continues with a proven petrol engine. The petrol engine variants dominated demand in Kolkata with 63% used sales, followed by the diesel with 34.8%. Although economical as an option, CNG variants only saw 2.2% sales, much lower compared to other cities. The vast majority, 97.8%, of used Ertiga buyers in Kolkata preferred it with the manual transmission, while only 2.2% opted for the convenience of its automatic gearbox variants.

4. Hyundai Venue | 6% Used SUV Market Share in Kolkata

The Hyundai Venue made its mark in Kolkata’s used SUV market, capturing 6% of the total sales in 2024. As a city that prefers economical and value for money cars, second hand Hyundai Venue cars in Kolkata are preferred for its compact dimensions that are a perfect fit for crowded city streets. Its feature-rich cabin is spacious and comfortable while Hyundai’s service network adds to the Venue’s many positives.

Used car buyers in Kolkata overwhelmingly favoured the Venue’s petrol variants, as many as 97% of whom opting for the same, while only 3% opted for diesel models. In terms of transmission preferences, manual gearbox versions led the way with 91% of buyers, while 9% chose automatic variants. The fact that the Hyundai Venue is one of the best low maintenance cars in the market is an added bonus for those buying it second hand. 

5. Renault Duster | 5% Used SUV Market Share in Kolkata

Used Renault Duster cars in Kolkata held a 5% market share in 2024, a decline from 6.9% in 2023. The Duster is well known for its durability and mild off-road capability, presenting itself as a rugged midsize SUV that’s especially appealing to adventure-seekers. It fits in perfectly in the urban cityscape of Kolkata and with buyers wanting an affordable lifestyle vehicle without being cumbersome compared to heavier off-road vehicles.  

Among used Renault Duster models in Kolkata, diesel variants made up 79% of sales in 2024, while 21% of buyers picked its petrol variants. The manual transmission was the only option preferred with either of its engines, accounting for 100% of used sales last year.

Kolkata’s used utility vehicle market in 2024 continued to reflect strong demand for fuel-efficient, practical, and affordable SUVs and MPVs. Used Hyundai Cretas led the segment, followed closely by the compact Ford EcoSport and ever popular Maruti Suzuki Ertiga MPV. Second hand Hyundai Venue cars in Kolkata also gained traction in the compact used SUV segment, while the Renault Duster continued to appeal to buyers seeking a rugged, reliable midsize SUV.

Diesel-powered models remained highly favoured in certain segments, particularly in the Duster and Creta, while petrol variants dominated the Venue and EcoSport. Manual transmission remained the most common choice, though automatic variants showed some growth in premium models.
