The Ciaz was a new nameplate from Maruti Suzuki when it was introduced in 2014. At the time, Maruti Suzuki offered two engines with the 2014 -2018 Ciaz.

The first engine was a 1.4 litre naturally aspirated petrol unit and it could be mated to a 5 speed manual or a 4 speed automatic transmission. While the 4 speed automatic transmission offered great comfort, it isn’t as competent as modern torque converters.

The second engine was a 1.3 litre diesel unit and it could only be specced with a 5 speed manual transmission. The diesel engine, though noisy, was highly efficient with an ARAI rated fuel efficiency of 26.21 kmpl. With the introduction of the Smart Hybrid System by Suzuki (SHVS) for the diesel engine in 2015, the fuel efficiency figure further improved to 28.09 kmpl.

From 2017 onwards, the Ciaz was sold through Martuti Suzuki’s premium retail outlet NEXA. In 2018, the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz received a facelift. More importantly, the 1.4 litre petrol engine was ditched for a larger 1.5 litre four-cylinder engine paired with the new-gen SHVS. In 2019, Maruti Suzuki replaced the 1.3 litre diesel engine of the Ciaz with an inhouse developed 1.5 litre unit. 

However, the arrival of BS6 emission norms in 2020 meant that the diesel Ciaz, like all other diesel models from Maruti Suzuki, was permanently discontinued.
