Outline

Being the second-largest car manufacturer in the country, Hyundai cars are undoubtedly popular in India. They offer practicality, style, and cutting-edge features across its portfolio and the hatchback range is no different. Sitting with a share of nearly 22% of the used market share, Hyundai ranks second as a preferred second-hand car brand too.

Hatchbacks continue to dominate the used car space with 53% market share, and the same continues for Hyundai. According to our internal data, all generations of the i20 claimed the majority share of Hyundai’s used hatchback segment in 2024, followed by the i10 and Grand i10. We’ll explore what makes Hyundai hatchbacks popular in the pre-owned car market.

The Hyundai i20, i10 and Grand i10 are undeniably popular and have been bought used, mostly in the petrol manual combination. In fact, manual transmission has been the most preferred among used Hyundai hatchbacks, accounting for over 90% of sales, given their light and slick shifting action.

While diesel cars have been declining in demand, petrol seems to be the go-to option as it even offers the choice of running CNG fitment for even better fuel-economy.

1. Hyundai i20

Hyundai i20

Leading the pack at 28% market share in Hyundai’s used hatchback segment for 2024, the i20 has consistently asserted itself as the brand’s premium hatchback. This includes all the generations of the i20 including the Elite i20 and the latest N Line models.

Used Hyundai i20 models have now taken over from the i10, which was the leading seller in the past years. The i20 is known for its upmarket feel, stable dynamics, and modern features. It particularly appeals to drivers wanting a touch of luxury within a hatchback package, without compromising on reliability or resale value.

Standout Features

  • Premium interiors with plush cabin materials.
  • High safety levels, even in older i20s that often include dual airbags and ABS.
  • Feature-loaded variants ranging from touchscreen infotainment systems to climate control and keyless entry/start.

Engine and Transmission Options

Over the three generations of the i20, petrol variants have primarily been powered with the 1.2-litre Kappa engine that produces 87 bhp and 115 Nm, and is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Newer models of the latest generation have also featured the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that outputs 118 bhp and 172 Nm.

This engine also features a dual-clutch transmission option apart from a 6-speed manual gearbox. Both engines boast high refinement levels, making it ideal for all types of  driving requirements.

The diesel variants have used a 1.4-litre CRDi engine producing 89 bhp and 220 Nm in the older generations. The latest gen, moved to a newer 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine with uprated performance and efficiency.

Even though the i20 diesel was discontinued in 2023, they accounted for 27% of used car sales in 2024, while petrol i20s accounted for 73%.

Fuel Efficiency

  • Petrol – Approx. 18 kmpl (varies by generation and gearbox).
  • Diesel – Approx. 23-25 kmpl.

2. Hyundai i10

Hyundai i10

With a substantial 26% share, used Hyundai i10 remains a favourite among buyers. The i10 had steadily commanded 25-27% market share of used Hyundai hatchbacks from 2021-23 before being relegated to second spot last year.

First launched in 2007, the i10 took over the mantle from the iconic Santro in Hyundai’s line-up, offering an updated design, improved cabin quality, generous space, and well-rounded driving dynamics.

Affordability, easy manoeuvrability, and low maintenance costs make the i10 a dependable choice for both new and experienced drivers.

Standout Features

  • Compact yet spacious interior with supportive seats for four adults to fit comfortably.
  • Refined and fuel-efficient petrol engines.
  • User-friendly cabin featuring large buttons, easy-to-read instrument clusters, and quality plastics that hold up well over time.

Engine and Transmission Options

The Hyundai i10 sold in India with options of two petrol engines. A 1.1-litre engine that produced around 66 bhp and was carried over from the Santro or the newer 1.2-litre engine that developed around 80 bhp, both were well-regarded for city driving.

Some later variants included factory-fitted LPG kits, and aftermarket CNG conversions are also common in the used market. While a 5-speed manual gearbox was standard for both engines, certain trims featured a 4-speed automatic, but it was not quite popular as they accounted for only 7% of used car sales in 2024.

Fuel Efficiency

  • Petrol – Approx. 19 kmpl.

3. Hyundai Grand i10

Hyundai grand i10

Accounting for 17% of Hyundai’s used hatchback sales, the Grand i10 was introduced in 2013 as an evolution of the i10. It offered a bigger footprint, better styling, and more advanced features, bringing it closer to the premium side of small hatchbacks.

For these reasons, the Grand i10 is known for bridging the gap between the entry-level i10 and the more premium i20. Used Hyundai Grand i10 buyers are particularly drawn to its combination of upmarket features and reliability.

Standout Features

  • Enhanced cabin space compared to the original i10.
  • Upmarket interiors and features even in mid-level variants.
  • Refined diesel option for those seeking improved fuel economy.

Engine and Transmission Options

Hyundai Grand i10 models feature a 1.2-litre Kappa VTVT petrol engine delivering 81 bhp and 114 Nm. The diesel alternative comes with a 1.2-litre U2 CRDi engine producing around 74 bhp and 190 Nm for a balanced mix of fuel economy and torque.

A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard, though select variants also offer a 4-speed automatic which are well in demand. Automatic Grand i10 models account for 10% of used car sales, but a majority still prefer the manual. Newer editions of the Grand i10 moved to a 5-speed AMT automatic option.

Fuel Efficiency

  • Petrol – Approx. 19 kmpl.
  • Diesel – Approx. 25 kmpl.

4. Hyundai Santro Xing

Hyundai Santro Xing

Occupying 12% of used Hyundai hatchback sales in 2024, the Santro Xing represents a generation of Hyundai’s famed “tall-boy” design. While the original Santro put Hyundai on India’s automotive map, the Santro Xing, introduced in 2003, revitalised the winning formula. It brought improved styling, a more modern interior, and incremental enhancements over the years.

Two decades on, The Santro Xing’s reliability has been well proven. An approachable price point and friendly road manners with ample space for small families make second hand Hyundai Santro Xing a sensible purchase.

Standout Features

  • Tall-Boy layout offers excellent headroom and easy ingress/egress.
  • Low ownership costs with affordable spare parts.
  • The small footprint and good all-round visibility are great for congested urban roads.

Engine and Transmission Options

The Santro Xing came with a petrol engine only, a 1.1-litre e-RLX unit that developed 63 bhp with peppy performance that’s ideal for commutes. To reduce running costs, many owners opted for aftermarket CNG or LPG conversion kits.

Transmission options were dominated by a 5-speed manual gearbox, with an extremely rare 4-speed automatic version.

Fuel Efficiency

  • Petrol – Approx. 18 kmpl.

5. Hyundai Eon

Hyundai eon

The Hyundai Eon was introduced as an entry-level hatchback in 2011. Although discontinued in 2019 to make way for the New Santro, the Eon remains in steady demand among buyers looking for fuss-free motoring. Among Hyundai hatchbacks, the used Hyundai Eon accounts for 8% of sales in 2024.

For first-time buyers, or those who need a second car, the attractive price point of a second hand Hyundai Eon remains its biggest selling factor.

Standout Features

  • The design stands out from entry-level competitors.
  • Compact dimensions make it a great urban hatchback.
  • Interior quality feels upmarket for its segment.

Engine and Transmission Options

The Eon was launched with two petrol engine options that included an 814cc, 3-cylinder unit producing around 55 bhp and 75 Nm. The other engine was a 1.0-litre Kappa engine making 68 bhp and 94 Nm. This engine was available in higher trims.

While not particularly powerful, both engines provide adequate performance for city commutes. A 5-speed manual gearbox was the sole transmission option on offer.

Fuel Efficiency

  • Petrol – Approx. 21 kmpl.

Conclusion

Used Hyundai hatchbacks remain a top choice in 2024 for their practicality, reliability, and style. Hyundai’s portfolio of hatchbacks ranges from the premium i20 to the budget-friendly Eon while cars like the i10 and Grand i10 stand out as great middle ground options. Hyundai’s ever-popular Santro Xing is still in good demand, a testament to the brand’s build quality and longevity of its cars.

With a vast service network, and numerous features, Hyundai hatchbacks make excellent second-hand buys. Despite these traits, one should ensure that a thorough inspection is carried out for a better ownership experience.
