According to our internal data, all generations of the i20 claimed the majority share of Hyundai’s used hatchback segment in 2024, followed by the i10 and Grand i10. We’ll explore what makes Hyundai hatchbacks popular in the pre-owned car market.

Top 5 Used Hyundai Hatchbacks in 2024

The Hyundai i20, i10 and Grand i10 are undeniably popular and have been bought used, mostly in the petrol manual combination. In fact, manual transmission has been the most preferred among used Hyundai hatchbacks, accounting for over 90% of sales, given their light and slick shifting action. 

While diesel cars have been declining in demand, petrol seems to be the go-to option as it even offers the choice of running CNG fitment for even better fuel-economy. 

1. Hyundai i20

Leading the pack at 28% market share in Hyundai’s used hatchback segment for 2024, the i20 has consistently asserted itself as the brand’s premium hatchback. This includes all the generations of the i20 including the Elite i20 and the latest N Line models. 

Used Hyundai i20 models have now taken over from the i10, which was the leading seller in the past years. The i20 is known for its upmarket feel, stable dynamics, and modern features. It particularly appeals to drivers wanting a touch of luxury within a hatchback package, without compromising on reliability or resale value.

Engine and Transmission Options

Over the three generations of the i20, petrol variants have primarily been powered with the 1.2-litre Kappa engine that produces 87 bhp and 115 Nm, and is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Newer models of the latest generation have also featured the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that outputs 118 bhp and 172 Nm. 

This engine also features a dual-clutch transmission option apart from a 6-speed manual gearbox. Both engines boast high refinement levels, making it ideal for all types of  driving requirements. 

The diesel variants have used a 1.4-litre CRDi engine producing 89 bhp and 220 Nm in the older generations. The latest gen, moved to a newer 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine with uprated performance and efficiency. 

Even though the i20 diesel was discontinued in 2023, they accounted for 27% of used car sales in 2024, while petrol i20s accounted for 73%.

4. Hyundai Santro Xing

It brought improved styling, a more modern interior, and incremental enhancements over the years.
