In Kolkata, the Swift, City and Wagon R claim the top three sports, while the Maruti Suzuki Also and Hyundai i10 make up the remaining top five. 1. Maruti Suzuki Swift | 5% Used Market Share in Kolkata

The Maruti Suzuki Swift was the best-selling used car in Kolkata in 2024. It held a 5% market share, with its popularity stemming from its fuel efficiency, peppy engine, and low maintenance costs. CARS24’s internal data shows that of all the used Swifts sold in Kolkata, 78% were powered by a petrol engine, and nearly all used Swifts sold (97%) had a manual transmission. Its reputation for durability and strong resale value also made the second hand Maruti Suzuki Swift a preferred choice among second hand car buyers.

2. Honda City | 5% Used Market Share in Kolkata

The Honda City was the second highest-selling used vehicle in Kolkata in 2024, commanding a 5% market share. Known as one of the most comfortable mass market cars in India, the City’s premium feel, spacious interiors, and smooth driving dynamics made it the best selling used sedan in Kolkata.

Its refined petrol engine and automatic transmission options made it a popular choice, but our data shows that 85% of buyers preferred the petrol City, with 88% choosing a manual transmission-equipped City. Additionally, its strong build quality and Honda’s reputation for reliability further cemented its place in the pre-owned car market. Many buyers also preferred a used Honda City for its superior highway performance, making it a well-rounded offering.

3. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.0 | 4% Used Market Share in Kolkata

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.0 was Kolkata’s third best-selling used car in 2024, accounting for 4% of sales. Its tall-boy design, spacious cabin, fuel-efficient engine and, most importantly, the fact that it’s one of the most affordable cars in India, especially used made it a go-to choice for used buyers. The Wagon R’s practicality stood out, as it offered ample headroom and legroom, making it an excellent option for city commuting. 

The 1.0-liter engine provided sufficient power while maintaining high mileage, which was a major factor for buyers concerned about running costs. Another highlight was that 94% of buyers chose a second hand Maruti Wagon R with a manual transmission in 2024, despite the automatic’s convenience. 

4. Maruti Suzuki Alto | 4% Used Market Share in Kolkata

The Maruti Suzuki Alto, despite its age, had the fourth-highest sales in Kolkata last year, equating to a 4% market share. As one of the most affordable and fuel-efficient hatchbacks, the old Maruti Alto was a preferred choice for first-time buyers and those looking for a compact city car. 

Its simple yet effective design, easy maintenance, and strong resale value contributed to its consistent demand. The fact that the Alto is one of the smallest cars in India made parking in Kolkata’s narrow lanes effortless, and its low running costs made it a budget-friendly option. Despite both petrol and CNG variants being available in the used market, all the used Altos sold in Kolkata in 2024 were petrol engine-powered.

5. Hyundai i10 | 4% Used Market Share in Kolkata

With a 4% market share, the Hyundai i10 managed the fifth-highest sales in the used market in Kolkata last year. Known for its refined engine, smooth driving experience, and well-designed interiors, a pre owned Hyundai i10 was a favourite among city commuters. 

Despite the convenience of an automatic transmission option, 97% of used i10 buyers in Kolkata opted for a manual gearbox. Additionally, Hyundai’s extensive service network in Kolkata ensured that the i10 is one of the best low maintenance cars in India. Buyers also appreciated the i10’s reliability, which made it a sensible choice in the pre-owned market.
