Sedans with Best Resale Value: Best Picks Under ₹10 Lakh
- 1Buyers consider resale value as an important buying factor for used cars
- 2Cars lose most of their resale value in their first year of ownership
- 3Buyers prefer sedans over SUVs for their dynamics, comfort and VFM quotient
Many factors come into play when buying a car like fuel type, body type, engine and transmission type and running costs. In the case of a used car, buyers generally consider the number of owners, kilometres covered, resale value and rate of depreciation.
Used car buyers generally prefer hatchbacks and SUVs but sedans enjoy a niche following which trickles down to the used car market as well. There are a few popular sedans that hold their resale value well. Before we take a look, let's understand the concepts of depreciation and resale value.
What is Depreciation and Resale Value for Used Cars?
Resale value is the monetary value of a car after a specific time period of ownership. Depreciation is the rate of reduction of a car's value over time. Simply put, the resale value is the price of the car after it’s depreciated over a period of time. For example, a Hyundai i20 depreciates by 37% after three years and its average resale value comes to around ₹ 4.45 lakh.
Used cars depreciate the most in the first year and have a high rate of depreciation in the first three years. It stabilises in the following years. Let’s talk about sedans with the highest resale value. For the sake of simplicity, we have segregated used sedans into two groups in terms of used car pricing.
Most Valuable Sedans Based on Resale Value and Depreciation
Referring to information from CARS24 sales data and CARS24 Gears of Growth report, we can deduce sedans with the highest resale value and the slowest rate of depreciation. Here’s what we found:

The Japanese sedan is popular thanks to its low running costs, spacious interior and reliability which reflect in its low rate of depreciation.
A second hand Maruti Dzire suffers 26.73% depreciation which is comparable to the most popular used hatchbacks.
