Launch Year and Key Specifications

The Tata Tiago was launched in April 2016. It came with two engine options:

• 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine, delivering 84 bhp and 114 Nm
• 1.05-litre Revotorq turbo diesel engine, producing 69 bhp and 139 Nm

Both engines were paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, offering commendable fuel efficiency: up to 23.84 kmpl for the petrol and 27.28 kmpl for the diesel (both ARAI-rated).

Initial Design Philosophy and Target Audience

The Tiago was based on Tata Motors' new Impact Design Philosophy, showcasing a fresh and youthful design with sharp lines, a smiling grille, and swept-back headlamps. The interiors were premium for its segment, featuring dual-tone themes, a Harman sound system, and touchscreen infotainment in higher variants. To appeal to adventure enthusiasts, Tata Motors launched the rugged Tiago NRG variant in 2018, positioning it as a "cross-hatch."

Key Highlights

The Tiago NRG stood out with:

In 2020, Tata refreshed the Tiago with a facelift, aligning it with its latest design language.

Cosmetic Changes

The facelift brought significant design upgrades:

• A new tri-arrow grille and sharper headlamps
• Redesigned bumpers and new alloy wheels

The facelift also made the Tiago BS6-compliant, enhancing its environmental credentials. The 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine produced 86 bhp and 113 Nm of torque. Transmission options were either a 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox. With the arrival of the facelift, Tata dropped the 1.05-litre diesel engine from the lineup. Key feature highlights for the Tata Tiago facelift included projector headlamps and LED DRLs, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, corner stability control, rear parking sensors, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

Tata Tiago Safety Rating for Global NCAP

Notably, in 2020, the Tata Tiago achieved a 4-star safety rating in Global NCAP crash tests, making it one of the safest cars in its segment.

• The Tiago excelled in adult occupant protection, thanks to its robust structure. It scored 12.52/17, with its child occupancy score coming in at 34.15/19 for a three-star rating

Tata Tiago i-CNG Launched in 2022

Tata Motors introduced the Tiago i-CNG in 2022, catering to the rising demand for alternative fuel options.

• Fuel efficiency of over 26 km/kg in CNG mode

Tata Tiago EV Launched in 2022

In late 2022, Tata launched the Tiago EV, making it India’s most affordable electric car. At the time, it was launched with an aggressive starting MSRP of ₹8.49 lakh (ex-showroom, India). It was also the only EV to be priced under the ₹10 lakh mark.

Variants Launched

The Tiago EV was introduced with multiple trims and battery options:

• 19.2 kWh battery, offering a range of 250 km.

• 24 kWh battery, delivering a range of 315 km.

   

Key Highlights

• Ziptron Technology, ensuring consistent performance and fast charging
• Support for DC fast charging, enabling a 10-80% charge in under 57 minutes
• Premium features like a 7-inch touchscreen, auto climate control, and connected car technology

Powering the Tiago EV was Tata’s Ziptron high-voltage architecture that used a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. Total output was 73 bhp and 114 Nm for the larger battery, while the smaller 19.2 kWh battery made 60 bhp and 110 Nm. Tata claimed that with the larger battery, the Tiago EV could hit 60 kmph in 5.7 seconds, while the smaller battery could do the same in 6.2 seconds.

To differentiate the Tiago EV from the ICE version, Tata gave it electric blue accents around the body and headlamps, in addition to a unique design for the 14-inch wheels. Tata offered the Tiago EV in five colours: Teal Blue, Daytona Grey, Pristine White, Midnight Plum and Tropical Mist.  

The Tiago EV received over 10,000 bookings within two weeks of its launch, highlighting the growing acceptance of EVs in India.
