The launch of the Hyundai Venue in 2019 marked Hyundai's entry into the highly competitive compact SUV segment in India. Designed to cater to urban buyers, it stood out with its bold styling, segment-first features, and wide range of engine options.

Launch Year and Key Specifications

The Hyundai Venue was launched in May 2019, positioning itself as a modern and tech-forward compact SUV. It offered three engine options:

  • 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine
  • 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine
  • 1.4-litre diesel engine

Transmission options included a 6-speed manual gearbox, a 7-speed DCT (for the turbo petrol), and a 5-speed manual for the 1.2-litre petrol. The Venue was the first mass market car in India to feature BlueLink connected car technology, which included 33 advanced features such as remote engine start/stop, geo-fencing, and voice commands.

Initial Design Philosophy and Target Audience

The Venue was designed with Hyundai’s ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ philosophy, combining rugged SUV characteristics with urban sophistication. Its bold front grille, projector headlamps with LED DRLs, and strong stance appealed to young, tech-savvy urban buyers looking for a blend of practicality and style.

Sales Performance

The Venue was an instant success in India, registering over 50,000 bookings within two months of its launch. By the end of 2019, Hyundai had sold over nearly 50,000 units of the Venue, making it a major competitor in the compact SUV market. Its competitive pricing, starting at ₹6.50 lakh (in 2019), played a crucial role in its strong sales performance.

iMT Transmission Launched for the Venue in 2020

In 2020, Hyundai introduced the Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) for the Venue, further expanding its appeal to buyers looking for innovation and convenience.

Key Highlights

The iMT technology was a first in India. It offered the convenience of clutchless driving while retaining the control of a manual gearbox. The iMT was paired with the 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine, which made 119 bhp. This technology appealed to buyers who wanted an affordable, hassle-free driving experience without fully committing to an automatic transmission. However, Hyundai discontinued the iMT in 2023 for the Venue.

Switch to 1.5-Litre BS6 Diesel

In line with India’s transition to BS6 emission norms, Hyundai replaced the Venue’s 1.4-litre diesel engine with a more powerful and fuel-efficient 1.5-litre BS6 diesel engine. This new engine produced 99 bhp and delivered commendable performance and mileage. It became a popular choice for buyers prioritising long-distance travel and cost efficiency.

In 2022, Hyundai gave the Venue a significant facelift, further enhancing its appeal with bold design updates, advanced features, and the addition of a sporty N Line variant.

Key Changes

The 2022 facelift introduced a host of upgrades:

  • Exterior updates: The front grille was updated with a bold parametric design inspired by Hyundai’s global SUVs. The rear received new LED tail lamps with a connecting light bar, giving the Venue a more premium appearance
  • Interior improvements: Hyundai added a new two-tone dashboard with premium upholstery. The infotainment system was upgraded to a larger 8-inch touchscreen with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Advanced features: Hyundai equipped the facelifted Venue with segment-first features, such as a four-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, digital instrument cluster, and ambient lighting

Mechanically, the facelifted Venue remains the same as its predecessor. So the 1.2-litre petrol, 1.0-litre turbo petrol and 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine options continued on sale. For transmission options, there was still a 5-speed manual, the iMT (later discontinued) and the 7-speed DCT, with the 1.5 diesel getting a 6-speed manual transmission. Higher variants of the facelifted Venue now offered drive modes (Eco, Normal, Sport), with other feature highlights being a reclining rear seat, an air purifier, dual USB-C slots positioned below the rear AC vents for the rear passengers, and a wireless phone charger, among others. As for safety, the Venue got six airbags, ESC, VSM, and hill-assist control.

N Line Variant Added

To cater to performance enthusiasts, Hyundai introduced the Venue N Line in 2022. Key highlights of the N Line included:

  • Sporty design elements like red accents, a dual-tip exhaust, and dark chrome grille.
  • A more engaging driving experience, thanks to a stiffer suspension setup, re-tuned steering, and disc brakes on all four wheels.
  • The N Line was powered by the 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine, mated to a 7-speed DCT.

The Venue N Line comes in two trims: N6 and N8. Both get the same engine option (1.0-litre turbopetrol), with the higher N8 trim getting equipment. Features like a dashcam with dual cameras, an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected car tech, and ambient lighting, among others. The other key difference between the two trims is that the N6 gets dual airbags, whereas the N8 gets six airbags. The N Line variant added a new dimension to the Venue lineup, attracting younger buyers seeking a sporty and dynamic compact SUV.

Conclusion

Since its launch in 2019, the Hyundai Venue has become a blockbuster success for Hyundai in India, crossing the 6,00,000 sales milestone in just four years. Its evolution has been marked by regular updates, segment-first features, and a focus on performance, design, and technology. The Venue continues to be a strong contender in the compact SUV market, setting benchmarks for competitors and delivering value to Indian car buyers.

Looking ahead, the Venue is poised to maintain its position as a favorite among Indian consumers, thanks to Hyundai’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction. The Venue’s journey is a testament to Hyundai’s ability to consistently deliver exactly what the buyer needs.
