Things You Should Consider Before Buying a Used Renault Kwid
- 1The Renault Kwid is a compact hatchback with crossover intentions
- 2Two engine choices were offered along with manual and automated transmissions
- 3Compact size and fuel efficiency made the Kwid popular in India
The Renault Kwid was introduced in India back in 2015 as a rival to the Maruti Suzuki Alto. The crossover hatchback gained popularity thanks to its compact size, clever feature packaging and the frugal, efficient engine. The Kwid offered bold styling and standard side-cladding which accentuated its all-road SUV vibe. Initially, the model was offered with an 800-cc petrol engine and a manual transmission. Over the years it also gained a 999-cc (1.0-litre) engine as well as an automated transmission (AMT). The present model, launched in 2022 received a styling and equipment revamp and offers a number of personalisation choices and accessory packs at competitive prices.

Renault Kwid: Model Overview
The Kwid was the model that got the ball rolling for Renault in the small car segment. The basics were in place: compact size, distinct styling, frugal engine, excellent suspension and ride quality.
First Generation (2015-2019, BW)
The Renault Kwid debuted in September 2015 and was on sale until 2019 when the facelift arrived. It was based on the CMF-A (Compact Modular Front Architecture) jointly developed by Renault and Nissan. This was the secret behind the light weight, efficient performance and commendable ride quality. The Kwid had 13-inch wheels wrapped in 155/80 tyres. It used a single large windscreen wiper; one of the signs of its smart low-cost approach. It also boasted of a 300-litre boot capacity; the largest in the class.
This first Renault Kwid had only one engine and gearbox on offer initially—a 0.8-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. It was intended to take a bite out of the best-selling Maruti Suzuki Alto’s market share. The engine served up 53 bhp and 72 Nm. Being made in India with strong local supplier support, it boasted of 98% localisation and started at just ₹2.57 lakh back then.
A second iteration followed a year later with a more powerful 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine making 67 hp and 91 Nm. This version was distinguishable thanks to chequered graphics on the lower part of the doors with ‘1.0’ stickers. This 1.0 version was offered with both a 5-speed manual and AMT. The AMT was called “Easy-R” and had a segment-first rotary dial drive selector.
The Renault Kwid Climber was first shown as a concept model at the 2016 Auto Expo. It was then introduced in 2018 as part of an update, becoming the range-topping variant. It was only offered with the 1.0-litre engine but had both manual and AMT choices. It also had a choice of a new Zanskar Blue paint finish with contrasting orange accents on the mirror covers, skid-plate and roof-rails.
First Facelift (2019-2022, BW)
The Renault Kwid received its first major facelift in October 2019. The execution of the new design still looks fresh and enticing years later, with the narrow LED daytime lights positioned above the headlamp cluster below. The LED daytime running lights mesh into the signature Renault grille and carry the Kwid into the next decade with ease. It also received larger 14-inch wheels and wider 165/70 tyres. Inside, a new 8-inch “MediaNAV” touchscreen was added with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It was also offered with an optional passenger airbag.
The Renault Kwid continued to offer the 0.8- and 1.0-litre petrol engines with the same 53- and 67-bhp output, also continuing with the five-speed manual and AMT gearbox choices.
Second Facelift (2022-present, BW)
The Renault Kwid received another big update in 2022. Renault discontinued the 800cc engine, but the 1.0-litre engine was updated to BS6-II regulations and it received a slew of safety updates. These included electronic stability control (ESC) and, for the AMT versions, even hill-start assist (HSA). Besides, the new Kwid offered striking dual-tone exterior paint choices and new design alloy wheels. Inside, it received several advanced features including a new 8-inch “MediaNAV Evolution” touchscreen incorporating smartphone connectivity via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as voice recognition and video playback. The starting price increased to ₹4.49 lakh, but it was in tune with the times, bringing dual front airbags as well as ABS with EBD. The Kwid had amassed sales numbers of over 4 lakh since it was first introduced in India.
Maintenance and Service Costs of the Renault Kwid
Service cost is one of the main factors to consider when buying a used Renault Kwid as it has an impact on the overall cost of ownership as well as the experience. Renault India have continuously tried to enhance the ownership experience and improve service costs and turnaround time and the Kwid has benefitted indeed. Here is the average service cost for the first five years of service for the Renault Kwid.
Service | Approx. Cost (₹) | Mileage (Km) | Months |
1st Service | 950 | 10,000 | 12 |
2nd Service | 1,150 | 20,000 | 24 |
3rd Service | 1,450 | 30,000 | 36 |
4th Service | 3,800 | 40,000 | 48 |
5th Service | 3,500 | 50,000 | 60 |
The parts for the Renault Kwid are quite easily available as Renault India have consistently expanded their touchpoint network across India. Renault has a wide range of original parts stockists and authorized service centres across the country. Finding a Renault service centre is easy, and getting the car serviced on time will help ensure its reliability and condition.
Apart from the periodic service schedule, a used car that has been extensively driven will require an occasional major service that may require replacement of parts like brake pads and spark plugs. The following are the costs that may be involved:
Brakes: Keep braking in check by replacing the brake pads at around 30,000 km. The Renault Kwid’s front disc pads cost around ₹900-1,200, disc rotors are ₹950 each, while the rear brake shoes cost between ₹1,000-1,300.
Under the Bonnet: A high-mile used Renault Kwid may need some replacements under the bonnet to fight squeaks and keep things running smoothly. The fan belt costs ₹185 and the timing chain costs ₹2,650.
Clutch: A car’s clutch lasts for a long time under normal driving conditions but it would need to be replaced at around 75,000 km. The clutch plate replacement cost is approximately ₹2,500 plus labour and consumables.
Resale Value of the Renault Kwid
The Renault Kwid is a highly localised as well as recognised car and retains a good resale value in India, owing to its affordability and reliability, and Renault’s growing network of authorised service centres and customer touchpoints. A Renault Kwid does hold its value well in the Indian market. Because of rising new car prices, a second hand Kwid is a popular purchase for those seeking a first car, and remains in high demand. On an average, a five-year old used Kwid retains about 55% of its original purchase value, whereas a three-year old Kwid retains about 65% of its value. These, of course, depend upon various factors, such as:
Model Year: Newer models hold higher resale value than older models.
Variant: Higher variants, such as RXT(O) or Climber command a better resale value because of their longer equipment list.
Condition: A well-maintained car that has been serviced regularly and is available with its service record will have better resale value.
Mileage: A more sparingly used car with a lower odometer reading will be valued higher.
Common Problems with a Renault Kwid
- NVH:
Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) from the Kwid’s three-cylinder engine has been reported on forums. This is mostly due to noise when accelerating at higher engine speeds in a lower gear. There are also reports of unwelcome noises like rattles and thuds. These are down to lesser sound deadening.
- Electrical Problems:
Several forums have reported owners of older Renault Kwid models facing problems with the fuel system, particularly with relays and the fuel pump.
- Loss of Power:
The Kwid’s 800-cc engine has its limitations, and turning on the air-conditioner when the car is accelerating can lead to a noticeable drop in power. In some cases, it can even lead to the car stalling altogether.
- Drive Selector:
In the Kwid Easy-R models with the rotary dial selector for the AMT drive modes, there have been instances of delays or even no response from turning the dial to the required reverse (R), neutral (N) or drive (D) position.
- Throttle Pedal:
The accelerator pedal, in older Kwid models, tends to not return to its original position, thereby retaining acceleration even after the driver takes their foot off the pedal.
