Best Selling Used SUVs and MPVs in Pune in 2024

In 2024, Maharashtra continued to be one of the largest used car markets in India with a 16.4% market share. Pune plays a key role in contributing to the uptake of used cars. The city’s growing urbanisation, IT sector expansion, and increasing vehicle ownership costs have led many buyers to opt for pre-owned SUVs and MPVs over new ones.

CARS24’s 2024 used car market report highlights a strong demand for used utility vehicles in Pune, driven by their versatility, fuel efficiency, and practicality. Buyers continue to prefer these family-friendly vehicles with high ground clearance and reliable performance to negotiate the unpredictable road conditions.

Top Selling Used SUVs and MPVs in Pune in 2024

At CARS24, SUVs and MPVs are grouped under a single broad category of ‘SUVs.’ The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga remained Pune’s best-selling pre-owned MPV, followed by the Hyundai Creta, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport, and Renault Duster were the top-selling used SUVs in the city.

Used manual transmission cars in this segment have seen a higher share of demand in 2024 than automatics. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the Renault Duster sold nearly all of their used examples in manual transmission variants. The popular Hyundai Creta and Tata Nexon standout with their significant demand for automatic variants in the used car market.

1. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga | 10% Used MPV Market Share in Pune

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga remained Pune’s most popular used MPV in 2024, securing a 10% market share in the city’s second-hand vehicle market. Compared to 2023, used Maruti Ertiga cars in Pune gained under a per cent in market share in 2024 but it was enough to rise from second spot to the best-selling MPV in the city. The Ertiga continues to be the go-to choice for families and commercial buyers due to its versatile seating capacity, affordability in maintenance, and good fuel efficiency.

Among used Ertigas sold in Pune in 2024, CNG variants were the most popular choice of fuel-type, accounting for 36.6% of sales. This was closely followed by 32.7% of diesel variants highlighting used car buyers in Pune preferring vehicles that return high fuel-efficiency. The Ertiga’s petrol variants took up the remaining 30.7% of used market share. Despite Pune’s growing traffic, 99% of Ertiga buyers still preferred the manual transmission, with only 1% opting for the convenience of the automatic transmission variants.

2. Hyundai Creta | 8.9% Used SUV Market Share in Pune

The Hyundai Creta continues to be the best-selling used SUVs in Pune, accounting for 8.9% of the market share in 2024. Demand for used Hyundai Creta cars in Pune rose from 7.1% share in 2023, showing a considerable uptake in the second hand used space given its value for money proposition. Its premium features, refined performance and spacious interiors help it retain a strong resale value, making it a top contender in the pre-owned midsize SUV segment.

A majority 67.8% of the used sales were the SUV’s petrol variants given the wide choice of engines that the Creta has offered over the years, while 32.2% bought the diesel-powered variants. Our data on transmission preferences showed that 72.2% of buyers in Pune opted for the manual transmission variants, while 27.8% went for the automatic gearbox equipped models.

3. Tata Nexon | 6.9% Used SUV Market Share in Pune

Used Tata Nexon cars in Pune have steadily gained traction since 2023. From 5% market share it has now risen to 6.9% in 2024 as it gains more popularity. The tight spaced and packed roads favour its compact dimensions while its robust build are very appealing to used car buyers in the city. 

Boasting a 5-star GNCAP rating, the Nexon is among the safest cars available in India. Along with its feature-packed cabin and strong engine options, the compact SUV makes for a great value used  car purchase. 68.6% of the second-hand Nexon models sold in Pune in 2024 were petrol variants, while 31.4% were diesel engine equipped models. The Nexon also saw a growing demand for its automatic transmission models, with 41.4% of buyers opting for them. The majority share of 58.6% still preferred the Nexon’s manual transmission models.

4. Ford EcoSport | 6.7% Used SUV Market Share in Pune

The Ford EcoSport continues to be a favourite among compact SUV buyers in Pune. With Ford’s exit from India failing to deter its fans, used Ford Ecosport cars in Pune secured a 6.7% market share in 2024. However, this compact SUV that led the charts in 2023 with a 9% market share saw a lower demand last year in the used car market. Despite all the odds, the Ford EcoSport was the best selling used SUV in India, and remains popular in markets like Pune.

Its sturdy build, sporty design, and reliable performance from its petrol and diesel engine options are some of the standout traits that continue to attract buyers. Fuel preference was evenly split, with 50% of used Ecosport buyers choosing its petrol variants and 50% opting for diesel. In terms of transmission choices, manual gearbox variants remained dominant, with 82% of buyers preferring them, while 18% went for the automatic transmission models.

5. Renault Duster | 6% Used SUV Market Share in Pune

The Renault Duster, a long-standing favourite in the budget-friendly midsize SUV segment, accounted for 6% of Pune’s used SUV market in 2024. Demand for used Renault Duster cars in Pune have remained steady, falling only slightly from 6.4% in 2023. Its rugged design and spacious cabin make it a popular choice for buyers seeking a reliable and affordable SUV.

Among pre-owned Renault Duster SUVs sold in Pune, diesel variants dominated the market, making up 88% of sales, while only 12% of buyers opted for its petrol versions. While the debate of manual vs automatic transmissions is still relevant, it’s clear that used Duster SUV buyers prefer the manual variants. An overwhelming 95% of buyers chose the 5 or 6-speed manual gearboxes, while just 5% opted for the automatic transmission variants.

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga led the segment, while the Hyundai Creta, Tata Nexon increasingly gained popularity.
