In 2024, Maharashtra was the largest second hand car market in 2024, accounting for 16.4% of all sales. Bustling metros like Mumbai have high costs of living, traffic congestion issues, and parking constraints that make many car buyers opt for pre-owned SUVs and MPVs. 

CARS24’s 2024 used car market report highlights a strong demand for MPVs and SUVs, which are well-suited to both city traffic and long-distance travels. Buyers looking for family-friendly vehicles, high ground clearance, and reliable performance continue to prefer SUVs and MPVs, reinforcing their dominance in the used car sector.

Top Selling Used SUVs and MPVs in Mumbai in 2024

At CARS24, utility vehicles are clubbed under a single broad category of ‘SUVs’ and include both MPVs and SUVs. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, a versatile MPV, remained Mumbai’s best-selling pre-owned MPV in 2024, while the Ford EcoSport and Hyundai Creta held firm as top-selling compact SUVs. 

Used automatic cars in this category of vehicles have seen a fair share of demand in 2024. Both the Hyundai Creta and Tata Nexon, two very popular SUVs in the second hand market, saw substantial demand for their automatic variants. But manual transmissions continue to dominate the market.

1. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga | 16% Used MPV Market Share in Mumbai

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga was Mumbai’s most popular used MPV in 2024, accounting for 16% of pre-owned utility vehicle sales in the city. While the  market share for used Maruti Ertiga in Mumbai dropped slightly from 18% in 2023, it remains the best-selling second-hand MPV in Mumbai due to its versatility, affordability, good fuel efficiency, and spacious interior.

Used Ertigas were predominantly preferred with the CNG option, which is the most cost-effective for daily commutes and long drives. Accounting for 45%, used Maruti Ertiga with the CNG kits were the most popular, while diesel and petrol variants accounted for 30% and 25% of sales respectively. Despite the traffic congestion that Mumbai is infamous for, a whopping 98% of used Ertiga buyers opted for the manual transmission variants while only 2% preferred the automatic models.

2. Ford EcoSport | 10% Used SUV Market Share in Mumbai

The Ford EcoSport is regarded as the original compact SUV in India, and is the best selling used SUV in India in 2024. A long-time favourite in the compact SUV segment, used Ford Ecosport cars in Mumbai retained a 10% market share in 2024 from 2023. Despite Ford’s exit from the Indian market, pre-owned EcoSport SUVs still hold steady demand. This highlights its robust build quality, sporty design, and balanced performance that’s valued by Mumbai’s used SUV buyers.

In 2024, used petrol and diesel EcoSport variants sold in nearly equal amounts, with 55% and 45% share respectively. As many as 23% second hand EcoSport buyers preferred the automatic transmissions. While automatics make for convenience, 77% of pre-owned buyers in Mumbai still opted for the EcoSport’s 5-speed manual gearbox variants.

3. Hyundai Creta | 9% Used SUV Market Share in Mumbai

The ever-popular Hyundai Creta remains as one of the best used SUVs to buy in 2024, accounting for 9% of Mumbai’s used SUV market. Demand for second hand Hyundai Creta cars in Mumbai in 2024 continued steady compared to 2023, a testament to its popularity. The Creta holds its value exceptionally well, making it a smart second-hand SUV choice.

In 2024, 60% of used Creta buyers in Mumbai preferred the petrol variant, while 40% went for its diesel variants. A similar percentage divide was seen in its transmission preference with 66% of buyers opting for its 6-speed manual transmission, while 34% chose the CVT or DCT automatic gearbox.

4. Toyota Innova | 6% Used MPV Market Share in Mumbai

The Toyota Innova is a legend among MPVs, always emerging as a segment leader due to its superb qualities as a utility vehicle. Pre owned Toyota Innova cars in Mumbai accounted for 6% of the used market share in 2024, recording a drop from 7% in 2023. 

Used Innovas are preferred for long-distance travels as well as chauffeur-driven commutes. The second hand Innovas with diesel engines are  especially popular with a staggering 92% of preference among buyers. In the used car market, a dominating 100% of buyers opted for the used manual models of the Innova.

5. Tata Nexon | 5% Used SUV Market Share in Mumbai

Accounting for 48% of the Nexon was the best selling used Tata SUV in 2024. Used Tata Nexon cars in Mumbai gained momentum from 2% share in 2023, to now holding 3% of the used SUV market share in the city. The Nexon’s strong safety ratings attributed to its robust build, and feature-loaded interior have contributed to its rising popularity.

Mumbai seemed to substantially prefer the used petrol model of the Nexon, with 77% of buyers preferring them over the diesel. While the used Nexons with the manual transmission continued to dominate with 66% of the market, leaving 34% for used automatic Nexons.

The Ertiga dominated the MPV segment, while the EcoSport, Creta, and Nexon led among SUVs. Petrol-powered utility vehicles continued to outsell diesel options in Mumbai albeit marginally.
