India’s pre owned car market outpaced new car sales in 2024 and that gap is projected to widen further. The increase in used car sales in metro cities like Bengaluru can be attributed to an increase in disposable income, with a need for affordable, compact and fuel efficient cars. 

As per CARS24’s used car report: Gears of Growth, the share of pre owned SUVs is on the rise as well. This article will give you an idea of what the most popular used SUVs and MPVs in Bengaluru are and why they’re a good choice in the used car market.  

Top Selling Used SUVs and MPVs in Bengaluru in 2024

CARS24 collectively classifies all utility vehicles as a single category–SUVs. The five best selling used SUVs and MPVs in Bengaluru in 2024 include two mid-size SUVs, two compact SUVs and an MPV. Two of these popular used SUVs, the Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport, are discontinued models but that hasn’t deterred buyers. The Duster and Creta both share the spot at the top of the list with a 9% market share in the category. Compared to our data for 2023, we see that the Creta has moved up two spots, at the expense of the EcoSport and Ertiga. 

Buyers of second hand SUVs in Bengaluru showed a preference for diesel in most of the models on this list. That said, the split with petrol buyers was very close overall. Similarly, there’s an overwhelming preference for manual transmission SUVs and MPVs, with the exception of used Cretas and used Nexons in Bengaluru.

1. Renault Duster | 9% Used SUV & MPV Market Share in Bengaluru

The Renault Duster remained one of the most sought-after used SUVs in Bengaluru accounting for 9% of sales, a feat it has achieved more than once. Despite its discontinuation in 2022, it remains a popular pre-owned choice for its great ride comfort, build and efficiency.'

Buyers of second hand Duster SUVs in Bengaluru showed an 81% preference for the 1.5-litre diesel engine, a true workhorse. Similarly, 87% of buyers opted for the manual transmission, with only 13% uptake of automatic transmission Dusters. 

2. Hyundai Creta | 9% Used SUV & MPV Market Share in Bengaluru

Tied for first place also with 9% share, the Hyundai Creta has proved to be the biggest gainer in 2024 versus the previous year’s used sales. Its characteristic solid build, spacious interiors, efficient engines and Hyundai’s reputation for reliability make a pre owned Creta car in Bengaluru a great choice. 

The Creta’s updates and generation changes have cemented its popularity, both in the used and new SUV market. Our data shows there’s a 63% preference for petrol and only a 37% preference for diesel. Overall, 38% of Creta buyers opted for automatic transmission models to deal with the Garden City’s congested city roads. 

3. Ford EcoSport | 8% Used SUV & MPV Market Share in Bengaluru

One of India’s favourite compact SUVs in the used market, the Ford EcoSport is similarly popular with buyers in the IT capital, owning 8% of the city’s used SUV market. Its characteristic sporty nature, sub-4m dimensions and reliability make it a good choice. The EcoSport was facelifted once during its lifecycle before it was discontinued in 2022. 

Buyers in Bengaluru showed a nearly even split in terms of preference between petrol and diesel. On the other hand, 86% of buyers of used EcoSport cars in Bengaluru opted for manual transmission cars over automatic.

4. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga | 7% Used SUV & MPV Market Share in Bengaluru

Maruti Suzuki’s people mover slipped a spot on this list since last year but still commanded a healthy 7% used market share in the SUV and MPV segments in the city. The Ertiga remains one of the best family cars in India thanks to its 7-seat layout, compact dimensions and reliability. 

As per our data, 52% of buyers opted for diesel when shopping for used Ertiga cars in Bengaluru. A further 45% chose the petrol model, with only a 2% uptake for CNG in the used market, much lower than in metros like Delhi for example. An overwhelming 91% of buyers chose used Ertigas with manual transmissions. 

5. Tata Nexon | 5% Used SUV & MPV Market Share in Bengaluru

The Tata Nexon rounds off this list, proving popular both in the new car market as well as the second hand car market. From its introduction in 2017, the Nexon lineup witnessed continual evolution with facelifts and even EV models added. 

Buyers of second hand Nexon cars in Bengaluru showed a 74% preference for petrol models, while only 26% chose diesel. The split between manual and automatic Nexon models in the used market was nearly even, with 57% of buyers opting for the manual. 

Conclusion

The best selling used SUVs and MPVs in Bengaluru in 2024 feature a vehicle each from five different manufacturers. Each of these utility vehicles is known for its practicality, comfort, fuel efficiency and reliability. This highlights how important these parameters are for the used car buyer. 

The discontinued Renault Duster still maintained its lead in the used SUV market, showing buyers still value its comfort and efficiency despite its age. The Hyundai Creta posted very similar numbers, for many of the same reasons, with the added advantage of featuring one of the best interiors in the SUV segment in India.

Our data has also revealed that buyers’ preference for petrol engines over diesel, as well as automatic transmissions over manual, are slowly increasing year on year.
