In this article, we will run through the used sedans that made it to 2024’s best-sellers list, what they had on offer that appealed to buyers, and why they make sense even in 2025.

Five Best-Selling Used Sedans in India in 2024

1. Honda City

The Honda City has been a mainstay in the midsize sedan segment, and continues to do well in the used market. In 2024, it managed to remain in high demand as far as used sedans go, thanks to its impressive build, comfort, and practicality. In fact, the City accounted for a sizable 16% of all used sedans sold in 2024. In particular, it was the third- and fourth-generation Honda City that was the preferred used purchase in 2024, as per CARS24’s internal data.

The Honda City gets a number of thoughtful and useful features, and it also gets a spacious, plush interior with a touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, and advanced safety features. Its understated design and comfortable ride further added to its appeal.

Engine and Transmission Options

The Honda City was available with a 1.5-liter i-VTEC petrol engine only in the third generation, with a 1.5-liter i-DTEC diesel engine joining the fray for the fourth generation. These engines offered a potent blend of performance and efficiency. 

Transmission options included a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, and a CVT automatic gearbox. Our data shows us that 83% of used Honda City buyers preferred the petrol/manual variant, despite the efficiency and convenience of the diesel and automatic, respectively.

Fuel Efficiency

The petrol variant of the City delivered a mileage of around 17 kmpl, while the diesel variant offered in excess of 22 kmpl, making it a cost-effective choice for long-distance commuters.

The year 2024 was a sales success not just for new examples of the Swift Dzire, but also for used examples of Maruti Suzuki’s compact sedan. It was a top choice among buyers seeking a reliable family car with a touch of elegance. A deep dive into our data shows us that buyers preferred the second generation Swift Dzire in 2024. Of all the used sedans sold in 2024, used Swift Dzire sales accounted for 16% of them.

Standout Features

The second-generation Dzire’s standout features included a spacious and comfortable cabin, a modern (for the time) infotainment system, and advanced safety features like dual airbags and ABS. Its design and good ride quality added to its appeal.

Engine and Transmission Options

The Swift Dzire was powered by a 1.2-litre K Series petrol engine and a 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine. Both engines were known for their refined performance and efficiency. Transmission options included a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT. 

However, our data reveals that while there was no particular preference between the engine options, 99% of used Swift Dzire buyers preferred the manual transmission.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency was a strong selling point for the Dzire, with up to 25 kmpl on offer (ARAI-rated), making it an impressively efficient compact sedan.

Reliability

The Dzire’s proven reliability, coupled with Maruti Suzuki’s reputation, made it a trustworthy choice in the used car market. It required minimal maintenance and offered consistent performance over the years.

3. Hyundai Verna

So much so that 9% of all the used sedans sold in 2024 were Vernas. Its well-rounded package appeals to both enthusiasts and practical buyers. The third and fourth generations of the well-rounded Korean sedan were the ones in most demand in 2024, as per our data.

The Hyundai Verna stands out with its striking design, which includes a cascading grille and sleek LED headlamps. Its interiors are made with premium materials, and it features an advanced infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. Safety is prioritised with up to six airbags, ABS with EBD, and electronic stability control.

Engine and Transmission Options

The Verna offers multiple engine options, including a 1.5-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel, with the diesel being the more efficient of the two. Understandably then, 52% of all used Hyundai Vernas sold in 2024 were diesel variants. However, 86% of used Verna buyers opted for the manual transmission, foregoing the convenience of the auto-equipped Vernas.

With fuel efficiency ranging from 17-25 kmpl, the Verna manages to deliver to both performance-oriented and economy-conscious buyers.

Hyundai’s reputation for quality and durability extends to the Verna, making it a reliable option in the used car segment. On average, for the second and third generation Verna, the maintenance cost comes to about ₹26,000 for 5 years, which equates to about ₹5,000 annually.

4. Honda Amaze

In 2024, our data tells us that it was the first generation facelift and the second generation Amaze that buyers flocked to the most. Overall, 8% of all used sedans sold in 2024 were Amazes.

However, despite the efficiency of the diesel, CARS24’s internal data reveals that 58% of used Amaze buyers in 2024 preferred the petrol variant. Similarly, only 10% of used Amaze buyers opted for the convenience of the CVT automatic, with 90% going with the 5-speed manual.

The Ciaz is also offered with manual and automatic options, but 91% chose to row through the gears manually in their used Ciaz in 2024.
