The second hand car market in India is growing stronger every year. In part, thanks to platforms like CARS24, which offer certified used cars that have been thoroughly checked for a buyer’s peace of mind, no matter the budget. For most car buyers in India, whether first-time car buyers or someone looking for a reliable choice, peace of mind is synonymous with Maruti Suzuki and its unparalleled network of service centres.

As indicated by CARS24’s internal data, Maruti Suzuki holds 36% share of used cars sold in 2024. Being the nation’s largest maker of cars, it’s natural that used Marutis are dominant in the second hand car market. If you’re on the lookout for a used car, these are the Maruti models that buyers have most preferred in 2024.

As one of the top-selling new cars month after month, the Maruti Suzuki Swift presents a similar story leading used car sales across the country. In the top five used Maruti cars that buyers prefer, the Swift Dzire stands out for two reasons. It’s also the only compact sedan on the list with a heavier preference for the diesel model. Any of the second hand Maruti models on this list represent a choice you can’t really go wrong with.

1. Maruti Suzuki Swift

swift

The Maruti Suzuki Swift, from its introduction in 2005 and through its subsequent generations to the fourth-gen Swift currently available, has remained a top-seller for the brand. This is thanks to its compact footprint, spacious interiors, powerful yet efficient engines and accessible price tag. For reference, the second-gen Swift was sold from 2011 to 2017, while the third-gen Swift was sold from 2018 to 2024.

According to CARS24 used car market report, Gears of Growth, nearly one in every three buyers opt for the 1.3-litre diesel engine when buying used thanks to its exceptional fuel efficiency. Meanwhile, our data also shows buyers prefer second-gen models. Given that second hand Swift models hold their value well, a buyer can rest assured their investment is safe even in the future.

Standout Features

The Swift has always held universal appeal with its sporty styling, relatively spacious cabin and blend of performance, efficiency and agile handling dynamics.

Engine and Transmission Options

While the new Swift is available with a 3-cylinder, 1.2-litre petrol engine only, the previous generations of the Swift were available with smooth and peppy 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or 5-speed AMT gearbox. Among used Swift buyers, 96% preferred the manual transmission.

Fuel Efficiency

The Swift’s ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figures of around 25kmpl, going up to 28kmpl for the diesel variants. Surprisingly, many Swift owners have come close to achieving these figures highlighting how good these engines are in the real world as well.

Reliability

The Swift is a good pick in the used market thanks to years of ownership reports over the years pointing to its reliable nature with low maintenance costs as well.

2. Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire

dzire

The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, introduced in 2008, sparked the craze for the compact sedan, adding a boot to the already popular Swift hatchback. The second-gen sold from 2012 to 2017 with a facelift in 2015, and represents a chunk of the preference in the used Swift Dzire market.

For the third-gen, Maruti dropped the Swift from the name and just named it Dzire to help differentiate the compact sedan from the hatchback. Our data shows that the buyer of the Swift Dzire prioritises practicality and efficiency, considering diesel models (52%) were preferred over petrol (48%).

Standout Features

The Swift Dzire offers more boot space than the hatchback on which it was based and managed to come across as an aspirational car at the same time.

Engine and Transmission Options

The Swift Dzire, like the Swift on which it was based, is offered with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and 1.3-litre diesel engine in the same state of tune, with the same 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT gearbox on offer. However, in the used market, 99% of all Swift Dzire sales were models with the manual transmission, as a mere 1% preferred the automatic.

Fuel Efficiency

Second-gen models offered between 19-23kmpl depending on the engine equipped. Facelifted Swift Dzire models (2015 onwards) were tweaked to deliver more fuel efficiency and the diesel Swift Dzire became India’s most fuel efficient car that year, with an ARAi-rated 26.6kmpl.

Reliability

Like the Swift hatchback, a used Swift Dzire remains a trusted choice in the second hand car market thanks to easy serviceability and good reliability.

3. Maruti Suzuki WagonR 1.0

wagon r

Since its introduction in 1999, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR has appealed to buyers for its tallboy design that makes for a high seating position and more room. Coupled with the typical Maruti-traits of peppy performance, commendable fuel efficiency and practicality, the WagonR has remained a top-seller through its second-gen in 2010, 2013 facelift and third-generation in 2019.

CARS24 data also shows the popularity of the CNG variant, with 30% of buyers opting for CNG versus petrol in the used WagonR market.

Standout Features

Tallboy design ensured great headroom compared to conventional hatchbacks, while also offering a visually larger profile to give a bigger car feel.

Engine and Transmission Options

The third-gen was the first time Maruti offered two engines in the WagonR — the 1.0-litre K10 engine and the 1.2-litre K12M engine with 5-speed manual and AMT gearboxes. It is, of course, the 1.0-litre WagonR that 95% of buyers most prefer, equipped with a manual transmission.

Fuel Efficiency

The 1.0-litre WagonR offers an ARAI-rated fuel efficiency of around 24kmpl, with CNG variants offering 34km per kg of CNG.

Reliability

The WagonR 1.0-litre has proved to be a reliable choice over the years, with very little going wrong pointing to robust mechanical, coupled with low maintenance costs.

4. Maruti Suzuki Alto

alto

Launched in 2000, the Maruti Suzuki Alto took over the mantle of mobilising India after the Maruti 800. Available with an 800cc petrol engine and a 1.1-litre petrol engine, it allowed Maruti to target different buyers with different priorities — fuel efficiency and performance — a trend it continued with for years.

In 2012, the second-gen Alto was launched bringing fresh looks and an ‘Alto 800’ name tag, with the third-gen Alto arriving in 2022. The WagonR has only overtaken the Alto as the third most popular Maruti used car in the last two years, as seen in CARS24 data trends, pointing to just how popular this model was and still is.

Standout Features

The Maruti Suzuki Alto has proven to be the stepping stone into car ownership for lakhs of families in the country thanks to its accessible price, fuel efficiency and nimble handling well suited to city driving.

Engine and Transmission Options

Available as the Alto 800 with an 800cc petrol engine and Alto K10 with a 1.0-litre engine in the second generation. The K10 variant from 2014 was the first to introduce a 5-speed AMT to the lineup, in addition to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

In 2019, the Alto K10 model was dropped, while the new-gen Alto in 2022 was once again available only with the larger engine and a CNG option. However, only 7% of Alto sales in 2024 accounted for the CNG model, while buyers significantly preferred the standard petrol engine.

Fuel Efficiency

The Maruti Suzuki Alto offers an ARAI-rated fuel efficiency of close to 25kmpl, making a used Maruti Suzuki Alto a frugal choice as a city car.

Reliability

As with any Maruti, especially one powered by the evergreen 800cc and 1.0-litre engines, the Alto has a proven track record with excellent reliability and low maintenance costs over its lifetime.

5. Maruti Suzuki Baleno

baleno

Another breakaway success for Maruti Suzuki, the Baleno hatchback was launched in 2015 and sold through the company’s premium Nexa dealerships. After a minor facelift in 2019, the 2022 Baleno facelift brought with it a much sharper design and several premium features.

As per CARS24 data, 15% of buyers chose the diesel variant, while 11% of buyers chose the CVT automatic. A second hand Baleno is a great option for someone looking for a large, premium hatchback on a budget.

Standout Features

An incredibly spacious cabin, upmarket design and fuel efficient engines solidified the Baleno’s appeal to both first time buyers as well as family car shoppers.

Engine and Transmission Options

The Baleno was available with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.3-litre diesel engine, with a 5-speed manual gearbox or CVT automatic for the petrol variants. A 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine was available in the Baleno RS variant. The Baleno’s engine was updated with a DualJet 1.2-litre petrol engine and mild hybrid technology in 2019.

Fuel Efficiency

With an ARAI-rated fuel efficiency of around 23kmpl, the Baleno is a large, premium hatchback with the impressive efficiency of a smaller car.

Reliability

The engines and gearboxes offered in the Baleno are tried and tested with reports of great reliability and low costs of maintenance, further adding to its appeal as a no-nonsense premium hatchback.

What Makes Maruti Cars a Leader in the Used Car Market?

Whilst not a traditional strong suit of the brand, safety of Maruti models is also on the rise and a point to be considered.

  • Fuel efficiency: Consistently rated high on fuel efficiency, Maruti Suzuki cars offer low running costs to buyers.
  • Reliability: With no major issues even after lakhs of kilometres run, a used Maruti can be a great car for all owners through its lifetime, whether it’s the first, second or third owner.
