Hatchbacks were always a practical and affordable means of getting around within cities. Although SUVs are gaining ground, there is a massive market for second hand hatchbacks. Of the total 1.63 lakh used car sales in India, Mumbai has contributed more than 9% of which almost half (49%) come from used hatchbacks.

Hatchbacks are the majority of the total used car sales thanks to their compact size, efficiency and practicality. The 2024 used car market report from CARS24 highlights their demand in Mumbai underlined by their spacious and well-equipped cabins albeit within compact proportions, fuel-efficient engines, good ground clearance, and practicality.

Best Selling Used Hatchbacks in Mumbai in 2024

Hatchbacks have often been the first car for many car buyers. Their practicality and versatility, vastly due to their smaller size, are key to their success. The most popular used hatchback car in Mumbai was the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.0 followed by the Swift, which both retained their respective share of the used hatchback as was the case in 2023.

Petrol models dominated sales, except the leader, the Wagon R 1.0, where CNG had a higher share. Petrol and diesel models have seen a slight decline, losing some share to CNG.

1) Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.0 | 10% Used Hatchback Market Share in Mumbai

One of the most popular used hatchback s for individuals as well as families is the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R. The Wagon R 1.0 is a spacious compact car that is highly versatile as well as fuel-efficient. There are a number of used Maruti Wagon R 1.0 cars in Mumbai with petrol and CNG available.

From CARS24 internal data, we see that 52.2% of Wagon R 1.0 sales were CNG used cars and the rest were petrol. This marks a 3.1% additional shift to CNG compared to 2023. Buyers opted for the manual transmission variants the most (96.1%), with the LXI topping the charts followed by the VXI, showing that affordability is high-priority.

2) Maruti Suzuki Swift | 9.7% Used Hatchback Market Share in Mumbai

The used Maruti Suzuki Swift in Mumbai is India’s bestseller and consistently a top selling used hatchback car in Mumbai. In 2024, it enjoyed a 9.7% share of the second hand hatchback market in Mumbai, based on CARS24 internal data. The Swift’s sporty design, smart infotainment, comfortable cabin, and good safety features make it a top choice.

A larger number of Swift models sold were petrol (77.4%). Diesel made up 22.6%, signalling a 0.2% gain from 2023. The manual transmission made up 94.8% sales, but automatics were 5.2%; a considerable 3.1% up from 2023. The best selling Swift variants were the VXI and VDI, both of which offer high fuel efficiency.

3) Hyundai i10 | 6.6% Used Hatchback Market Share in Mumbai

The second hand Hyundai i10 in Mumbai was the third most popular hatchback in 2024 with a share of 6.6% in the used hatchback market. The i10 is a popular choice for used car buyers looking for a fuel-efficient city car on a budget. It has a spacious cabin, is easy to manoeuvre, and also has some efficient engines. 

All the Hyundai i10 cars sold were petrol, with both 1.1- or 1.2-litre engine options available. The i10 automatic was quite popular with 15.2% buyers, more than in 2023, although manuals still had an 84.8% share. The best selling i10 variants were the Magna and Sportz.

4) Hyundai i20 | 6.3% Used Hatchback Market Share in Mumbai

The premium hatchback space has long seen the Hyundai i20 shine. The market for used Hyundai i20 in Mumbai is huge with a share of 6.3%. It is popular thanks to its various engine and transmission choices, including petrol and diesel options of different sizes, as well as its styling and equipment level.

Petrol engines made up 89% of used Hyundai i20 sales with diesel making up 11%, as per CARS24 data. Manual transmission variants had a massive 98% share of the second hand i20 cars sold in 2024 and the Magna was the best selling i20 variant, with the higher Sportz and Asta being tied for second-highest.

5) Maruti Suzuki Baleno | 5% Used Hatchback Market Share in Mumbai

Maruti Suzuki’s premium hatchback from the Nexa brand made its way up to the top five in 2024. There are quality used Maruti Suzuki Baleno cars in Mumbai with a mix of petrol and diesel engines on offer. Although its share of the used hatchback market in Mumbai was 5%, the Baleno commands attention with its features and styling.

When it comes to fuel, 92% used Baleno cars sold were petrol while 8% were diesel. These figures are consistent with 2023 as well. Though the most selling transmission was the manual (79%) share, 21% buyers chose automatic transmission variants; the same as the previous year. The best selling Baleno variants were the mid-level Zeta followed by the cheaper Delta.

Conclusion  

Mumbai’s used hatchback car market continued strong with over 53% share of the used car market. Low cost, comfort and practicality make hatchbacks the preferred used car choice. The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.0 continues to lead the hatchback sales race with the Swift still in second place, and the Hyundai i10 in third.

In terms of fuel preference, used CNG cars in Mumbai found more buyers although petrol still makes up the vast majority. A number of used hatchbacks with diesel options, notably the Maruti Suzuki Swift, apart from the Hyundai i20 and Maruti Suzuki Baleno have strong sales. Manual transmissions made up 88% share but more used car buyers in Mumbai chose automatics compared to 2023.
