In 2024, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai dominated the segment, with their models capturing all five spots among the city’s best-selling used hatchbacks. 

While petrol remained the preferred fuel type, used diesel cars still captured a significant share, thanks to their superior fuel economy and the absence of strict diesel regulations in the city. 

A notable trend in metro cities is the growing demand for automatic cars, driven by increasing traffic congestion. However, in Lucknow, automatics accounted for just 6% of used car sales, reflecting a stronger preference for manual transmissions

Maruti Suzuki Swift | 9% Used Hatchback Share in Lucknow

The Maruti Suzuki Swift dominates the used hatchback market in Lucknow, claiming a solid 9% share. But its appeal goes beyond just hatchbacks—it’s also the best-selling used car overall in the city, with a market share of 5%.

Over the years, the Swift has offered  multiple engine options, including the widely used 1.2-litre K-Series petrol and the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel. Among used Swift cars in Lucknow, 38% are diesel-powered, making it a go-to option for buyers who prioritize fuel economy. Additionally, manual transmissions reign supreme, with 96% of used Swift models sold featuring a manual gearbox, further reinforcing its reputation as a driver’s car.

Nationally, the Swift remains a frontrunner in the pre-owned market, holding an 11% share of the used hatchback segment across India in 2024.

Hyundai Grand i10 | 8% Used Hatchback Share in Lucknow

Another strong contender in Lucknow’s used car market is the Hyundai Grand i10, which accounts for 8% of the city’s used hatchback sales. Buyers looking for fuel efficiency will appreciate that a sizable 15% of used Grand i10s models in Lucknow were sold with a diesel engine. Transmission preferences mirror that of the Swift, with 96% of pre owned Grand i10 models in Lucknow being manual.

Nationwide too, the Grand i10 maintains a solid presence, contributing 5% to the total used hatchback market. In fact, the Grand i10 accounts for 17% of Hyundai’s used hatchback sales in India, positioning itself well between Hyundai’s entry-level i10 and the more premium i20. 

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.0 | 7% Used Hatchback Share in Lucknow

The Wagon R 1.0 remains a hot favorite among used car buyers in Lucknow, securing 7% of the hatchback market. Known for its signature tallboy design, it provides excellent headroom and practicality, making it a great city car. Nationally, it captures a 6% share, reflecting its consistent popularity. 

Since its introduction, the Wagon R has undergone multiple updates, with the K10B 1.0-litre petrol engine, now the most sought-after option due to its efficiency and smooth power delivery. 67% of second hand Wagon R models in Lucknow were sold in petrol configuration, but the model’s CNG variant also found a fair share of takers, accounting for 33% of sales.

Another interesting trend among used Wagon R buyers is the overwhelming preference for manual transmissions, with 94% of models featuring a manual gearbox.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno | 7% Used Hatchback Share in Lucknow

Positioned as a more premium alternative to the Swift, the Baleno holds a 7% share in Lucknow’s used hatchback segment. Despite its premium branding, it shares Maruti’s core strengths—fuel efficiency, reliability, and affordability, which also makes it the fifth best selling overall used car in Lucknow last year.

From its inception, the Baleno has offered multiple powertrain options, including a 1.2-litre petrol engine and the now-discontinued 1.3-litre diesel. Among used Baleno models in Lucknow, 86% of sales came with the petrol engine, while transmission-wise, 97% of the sold models are manual.

On a national level, the Baleno continues to hold strong, with 10% of total used Maruti hatchbacks and 5% share in India’s overall used hatchback market in 2024. 

Maruti Suzuki Alto | 6% Used Hatchback Share in Lucknow

No list of top-selling hatchbacks would be complete without the Maruti Suzuki Alto, which commands a 6% share of Lucknow’s used hatchback market.

With its compact size and efficient engines, including the 796cc and 998cc petrol motors—the Alto is perfect for navigating congested city streets. 90% of used Alto models in Lucknow were sold with a petrol engine, and notably, every single Alto sold is a manual transmission model, reaffirming its status as a simple and reliable used vehicle.
