Notably, the Swift stood out as the only model to capture a double-digit share in an alternative fuel type, with 22% of buyers choosing diesel over petrol.

Interestingly, Kolkata’s buyers showed a strong preference for the manual transmission, which accounted for nearly 93% of total used car sales in the city.

Maruti Suzuki Swift | 8% Used Hatchback Share in Kolkata

The Maruti Suzuki Swift has been a household name in India since its debut in 2005, and even in 2024, it remains Kolkata’s most popular used hatchback with 8% market share. Nationally, the Swift also ranked as India’s top-selling used car with a 6% market share.

Among used Swift models in Kolkata, petrol-powered variants dominated, making up 78% of sales, while diesel accounted for 22%. Additionally, the manual transmission was overwhelmingly preferred, with 97% of buyers opting for it over automatic models.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.0 | 6% Used Hatchback Share in Kolkata

The Wagon R 1.0, known for its tall-boy design and spacious cabin, secured 6% of Kolkata’s used hatchback market. It features a 66 bhp petrol engine and comes standard with a manual transmission, though later years did offer the option of an AMT transmission. However, Kolkata’s buyers overwhelmingly preferred manual models, accounting for 94% of sales. Petrol remained the go-to choice for most buyers, with only 1% of used Maruti Wagon R cars in Kolkata being sold with the CNG kit.

With low maintenance costs, ample boot space, and strong resale value, a used Wagon R 1.0 remains a practical and budget-friendly hatchback for city commuters. The Wagon R in fact, was the third best selling used hatchback nationwide last year with a market share of 6%.

Maruti Suzuki Alto | 6% Used Hatchback Share in Kolkata

A staple in India’s small car segment, the Maruti Suzuki Alto continued to attract buyers in Kolkata, claiming 6% of used hatchback and 4% of total used car sales. Powertrain choices have varied over the years, with the Alto K10 featuring a 998cc engine alongside the standard 796cc petrol unit in the Alto 800. But the Alto has historically been offered as a petrol only model, with only recently receiving a CNG option. 

The manual transmission remained the undisputed favorite, with 100% of second hand Maruti Alto cars in Kolkata being sold with it.

Hyundai i10 | 6% Used Hatchback Share in Kolkata

The Hyundai i10 captured 6% of Kolkata’s used hatchback market and 4% of the overall city’s used car market, underscoring its ongoing popularity among buyers seeking a refined yet compact urban car. 

Designed initially for Indian consumers before gaining success globally, the i10 struck the perfect balance between ease of driving and low ownership costs. The first-generation i10 was exclusively a petrol only model, using a 1.1-litre or 1.2-litre option. Among pre owned Hyundai i10 models in Kolkata, manual transmission was overwhelmingly preferred, making up 97% of sales, while 3% of buyers chose the 4-speed automatic with the larger engine.

Hyundai Grand i10 | 5% Used Hatchback Share in Kolkata

The Hyundai Grand i10, which accounted for 5% of used hatchback sales in Kolkata, took the success of the i10 to the next level. Introduced in 2013 as the second-generation i10, it offered a 200mm longer body, making the cabin noticeably more spacious. Loaded with segment-first features, the Grand i10 impressed buyers with dual-tone upholstery, keyless entry, rear AC vents, and steering-mounted controls.
