In this article, we’ll unearth which used cars sold the most in Mumbai in 2024, and the reasons behind their popularity.

Top Selling Used Cars in Mumbai in 2024

While the Maruti Suzuki Swift was the highest-selling used car in India in 2024, that honour goes to the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.0 in Mumbai last year. The tall-boy hatchback managed a 5% market share, which was mirrored by the next two highest sellers, the Swift and the Honda City. 

Additionally, used petrol cars dominated sales in Mumbai, and two sedans made the top five best-sellers list.

1. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.0 | 5% Used Market Share in Mumbai

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.0 secured a 5% market share in Mumbai's used car market in 2024, making it the best-selling used vehicle last year in the island city. Its popularity is primarily due to its compact yet spacious design, making it ideal for navigating Mumbai's congested streets. The tall-boy design offers ample headroom and a comfortable seating position, appealing to families and individual buyers alike. 

The efficient 1.0-liter petrol engine, however, only accounted for 48% of all used Maruti Suzuki Wagon R sales in Mumbai last year, with 52% of buyers opting for the CNG variant. The transmission split was more one-sided though, with 96% of all buyers preferring the manual gearbox-equipped Wagon R. 

Maruti's reputation for reliability and the widespread availability of service centres in Mumbai further enhanced the Wagon R's appeal among used car buyers.

2. Maruti Suzuki Swift | 5% Used Market Share in Mumbai

With an equal-best 5% market share, the Maruti Suzuki Swift was the second best-selling used car in Mumbai last year. Its sporty design and responsive handling made it a pleasure to drive, even across Mumbai’s varied road conditions. 

The Swift's 1.2-liter petrol engine offers a balance between performance and fuel efficiency, and this appealed to second hand Maruti Suzuki Swift buyers, with 77% opting for the petrol variant. Also, 95% of used Swift buyers preferred one with the manual transmission equipped, as per our internal data. 

Lastly, the vehicle's strong resale value and Maruti Suzuki’s trusted brand image contributed to its sustained demand in the used car market.

3. Honda City | 5% Used Market Share in Mumbai

The Honda City was the third best-selling used car in Mumbai in 2024, with a 5% market share. The City is famous for its premium build quality and spacious, well-designed interiors, and it appealed to buyers looking for a car that’s both comfortable and reliable. 

The City’s 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine is celebrated for its smooth performance and fuel efficiency, and the numbers back it up: 94% of the people who bought a pre owned Honda City in Mumbai opted for a petrol engine variant, and 76% of used City buyers preferred a manual transmission. 

All in, the sedan's design and reputation for durability enhanced its desirability among used car purchasers in Mumbai.

4. Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire | 4% Used Market Share in Mumbai

The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, with a 4% market share, was the fourth best-selling used car in Mumbai last year. The compact sedan’s spacious interior, sizable boot, and the fact that it’s one of the sedans with the lowest maintenance costs appealed to a wide variety of buyers. 

Of the people who purchased an old Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, 62% preferred one with a petrol engine, and 99% opted for the manual transmission. The Dzire's comfortable ride quality and Maruti's extensive service network in Mumbai further contributed to its popularity among used car buyers.

5. Hyundai i10 | 3% Used Market Share in Mumbai

Despite newer iterations having been launched, the old Hyundai i10 still managed to garner a 3% market share, making it the fifth best-selling used car in Mumbai in 2024. Its compact size and nimble handling make it well-suited for urban driving conditions, and the i10's interior is thoughtfully designed to maximise space. 

There was a clear preference in terms of the preferred power plant, with 99% of all used i10s sold in Mumbai last year being petrol powered (with the rest being LPG-powered). Similarly, 85% of used i10 buyers in Mumbai opted for the manual gearbox. 

What sealed the deal for buyers was Hyundai's reputation for quality and the availability of service centres across Mumbai.
