Outline

Rising new car prices, rapid urban expansion, and growing awareness of the benefits of buying a used car have fueled the growth of India’s used car market. Increasing confidence in online platforms like CARS24 has further accelerated this trend.

According to CARS24's latest internal sales report, India’s pre-owned car market outpaced new car sales in CY24 with a ratio of 1.3:1 — meaning that for every 10 new cars sold, 13 used cars were purchased.

Certain car brands have driven this surge, dominating the used car market with consistently high demand. Let’s take a closer look at the top-performing brands and the models that shaped this trend last year.

Top Selling Used Car Brands in India

The data confirms that hatchbacks remain the backbone of India’s used car market. But the rising popularity of compact SUVs and the steady demand for sedans reflect a diversified market. Today, used car buyers seek a balance of practicality, comfort, and affordability.

Maruti Suzuki’s dominance stems from the widespread appeal of its hatchbacks and sedans, which are known for their reliability, low maintenance costs, and strong resale value. On the other hand, Hyundai’s strength in the hatchback segment highlights a growing preference for compact cars that offer a mix of premium features and affordability.

Tata’s growing focus on safety and build quality has contributed to increased consumer trust, while Honda stood out for its strong sedan lineup.

The Swift led the charge as the best-selling used Maruti car in India last year, with a 24% share among Maruti hatchbacks. It also topped the overall used car market with a 6% nationwide share. The Swift Dzire reinforced Maruti’s dominance in the sedan segment. It was the best-selling Maruti sedan and held a 16% slice of the total sedan market, making it the second-best-selling sedan in India. The WagonR also remained a key player in Maruti’s lineup.
